Defined
as much by the scars on her face as the genetic mutation from which she derives
hyper-keen senses, the once-beautiful mutant warrior known only as Callisto
sought solace among kindred spirits. Under the streets of Manhattan, she
established a secret society of mutant outcasts. But when outside forces tore
asunder the Morlocks' subterranean community, Callisto was cast out once again
into the cold, hard world above. The sparks of her rage swelled into a towering
inferno, stoked by the hatred and fear of her human oppressors. Callisto lashed
out, but ultimately evinced the heart of a hero. Now, she must make her way on
the mean streets, a mutant alone!

History: Little is known about the past of the mutant called Callisto. She once
was a beautiful young woman; it has not been revealed how she lost her right eye
or acquired the scar on her face. Callisto came to view herself as an outcast
from society, and she rebelled against it. She discovered the Alley -- a massive
tunnel built beneath New York City during the 1950s as part of a network of
passages for use by the government and military in case of a nuclear war, but
since abandoned. Callisto made her home in the Alley and found the creature
called Caliban, who possesses the psionic ability to locate others of their
kind. Using Caliban's power, Callisto gathered together a large community of
mutants who considered themselves social outcasts; they came to live under her
leadership in the network of tunnels. Callisto named the Morlocks after the
subterranean race depicted by H.G. Wells in his science-fiction novel The
Time Machine.
When the Morlocks abducted the high-flying hero called Angel to be Callisto's consort, they came into conflict with the masked, mutant X-Men. Callisto was defeated in single combat by the weather-manipulating X-Man known as Storm, who thereafter became the Morlocks' leader. However, Callisto continued to fill the role in Storm's absence. Callisto subsequently clashed with the X-Men when she attempted to force one of the team's members, the phase-shifting Shadowcat, to wed Caliban. Again, she battled Storm and lost. Callisto then became a warrior-servant of sorcerer Kulan Gath, who reverted New York City to the hyborian age. Storm saved her life; together, they defeated Kulan Gath. The Marauders, a band of superhuman assassins answering to the twisted geneticist called Mr. Sinister, wounded Callisto during their massacre of the Morlocks. For a time, she took refuge among the X-Men and became bodyguard to genetic researcher Moira MacTaggert. Eventually, Callisto and the few remaining Morlocks joined Mikhail Rasputin, brother of the steel-skinned X-Man called Colossus, in the dimension later dubbed "The Hill." Now romantically involved, Mikhail and Callisto created Gene Nation, a militant terrorist cell seeking to punish the "upworlders" on Earth for their grievances against mutantkind. Their stay in this dimension did not last long, due largely to Storm's intervention, and Callisto and the rest of Gene Nation returned home. Joined by Marrow, a former member of Gene Nation, Callisto attempted to abduct government agent Henry Gyrich. The two held Gyrich responsible for Operation: Zero Tolerance, the government-sanctioned extermination of all superhumanly powerful mutants. The wisecracking, web-slinging super hero called Spider-Man rescued Gyrich, but the involvement of Marrow and Callisto caused the activation of two mutant-hunting Sentinels. Having witnessed too many deaths in her lifetime, Callisto threw herself in the path of a bio-blast intended for Spider-Man and Marrow. She suffered serious injuries, but afforded the others a fighting chance. Callisto was taken into the Morlock tunnels by Marrow to heal. Subsequently, she left the young mutant in the X-Men's care.
