Simple Directional WIFI Antenna

Zoomkat's home page

A simple parabolic WIFI antenna for war driving or just connecting to distant access points. It is based on a parabolic reflector outline available here at the free antennas web site. Print out the outline and use it to mark the cardboard base for cutting. The antenna reflector is made from a piece of manilla folder approx 3.75" x 11.5" with aluminum foil taped to it (using aluminum faced duct tape would probably make it a bit more rigid and durable). The cardboard base is notched on the ends so the ends of the reflector slide in and are held. A little hot glue can be used to hold the cardboard base and the reflector in the proper positions if you don't need to take it apart again. The WIFI adapter antenna sticks up through the hole int the cardboard base made at the focal point of the reflector. Adjust the reflector in the cardboard base so when the base is slipped over the antenna, it will all be level when sitting on a flat surface. The WIFI adapter is a Microsoft USB unit with a business card type of refrigirator magnet hot glued to the bottom. This makes the WIFI adapter grip to metal very well. For general war driving with out the parablolc reflector I just reach the adapter out the window and stick it on the roof with its antenna sticking straight up. Works very well for general driving or for close access points. To do some 360 deg scanning with the reflector on the WIFI adapter, I hot glued a metal can lid to the end of an approx. 27" 3/8" dowel (length long enough to clear the roof of the truck). The magnetic base hot glued to the WIFI adapter grips to the can lid nicely. I can hold this antenna setup out the window and slowly rotate it to pick the more distant access points. I put a little finishing nail in the bottom of the dowel so it fits in the window slot in the door for easier holding and turning. The pictures below pretty much show the deal. This reflector got squished in the back seat, so it looks a little bent now and needs to be remade. I stapled a thin cardboard tab to the cardboard base and hooked it under the rubberbands on the WIFI adapter to hold the reflector straight when on the end of the dowel. YMMV!
