A detailed sketch of the Chateau De Fontaine-Henri, Normandy, France. Note the overall simplicity of the decors, unlike some other royal buildings which are richly adorned with sculptures |
Stamford house, formerly a colonial era hotel is perhaps of Singapre's most elaborately decorated colonial buidlings. Sketch was made in the field from what was Bras Basah Park, one of my favourite working locations... |
Introduction Apart from illustrating animals, cartoons and the like, I also enjoy depicting buildings. Unlike depicting animals, whichI feel has a strong emphasis on texture (depends on the natural convering eg. fur or feather which I find quite hard to master) as well as 'gizz' , these factors are of lesser importance in buildings. Many a times, I find myself engrossed in capturing the raw structure of the building as well as paying importance to little details like windows and sculptures on the building. What makes it so different from capturing animals is that they are stationery, so one need not worry that the subject scurry away when it is being sketch or painted... But this does not mean that it will be capture in a lifeless manner...just like animals, buildings have a life, an aura of their own and by adding characters in or around the buidling, as well as giving it a bright and lively surroundings, it brings out the 'personality and soul' of the building... |
This page is still under construction, more materials will be added soon... Construction has been slow due to increasing labour costs and the recent crackdown on illegal foreign labour as well as outdated tools |
The warm pleasing red colours of the MPH buildings flanks the intersection of Armenian and Stamford Roads. Alternating black red tiles and furnishings give the building a sort of tudor-victorian charm. Sketch made from watercolours and pencils in the field. |
(Above) The elegant facades of the St Joseph's Cathedral render it to be one of the more prominent churches present today in Singapore, amongst other old favourites like St Andrew's and CHIJMES. Its partly domed spire rises 50 metres above the courtyard and I personally find it to be the most splendid building along the busy lanes of Victoria Street. Captured in pencil here, from the couryard adjacent to the Nanyang institute during a friday evening mass hours... |
