| Monastario introduces Diego de la Vega to the Viceroy as the infamous "Zorro". | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Capitan Monastario is convinced. Believing that it is Diego de la Vega standing before him, Monastario pronounces that "Without a doubt, this man is Zorro." "You can't ask for a more positive identification than that," Diego says as he springs up from behind the bar. Horrified, Monastario pulls the mask from the man before him only to discover one of his own lancers. Knowing he has somehow been tricked, Monastario challenges Diego to a duel. Diego agrees, and the fighting commences. |

| "Now admit you are Zorro, or your throat will never utter another sound. I give you one, last chance." At that moment cries of "Zorro! Zorro!" are heard from the street. When the door is opened, a knife and note are in it. |

| The Viceroy reads the note. "Sorry to have missed your fiesta, Zorro." "You put on a very convincing show, Monastario, but I had all the evidence I needed against you and Licenciado Pina before I came here." "You'd take the word of my enemies?" a stunned Monastario demands. "It seems that nearly everyone in California is your enemy. You are both under arrest. Take them away," the Viceroy orders. Capitan Monastario and Pina are taken away in disgrace. The Viceroy appoints Sergeant Garcia as the acting commandante of the pueblo. Bernardo, changed from the Zorro clothes he wore when he rode past and threw the knife and message at the door, joins his master in the celebration. Monastario is left to wonder how the fox has outwitted him yet again,, Still convinced that he is right in his assertion, the capitan is left to ponder his fate as he tries to determine what went wrong. |
