An OU Web expert will offer a newly-formed support group basic instruction on making a Web site interactive at noon today.

Stephen Tharp, OU Web team coordinator for the Norman campus, will speak at the OU Web Developers Support Group's third monthly meeting in the computer lab, 230 Physical Sciences Center.

The Web support group is free and open to anyone responsible for creating and maintaining Web pages for OU departments and programs.

"Even though we are not formally recognized as part of Computing Services, their staff--and particularly Stephen Tharp--have been a tremendous resource to our group," said Brenda Wheelock, Public Affairs writer and editor.

Wheelock and Connie Smith, who does public relations work for the Oklahoma Geological Survey, founded the Web Developers Support Group in April.

Convinced there were secrets about creating Web pages they lacked the time and resources to discover, Wheelock said they felt a support group would be a great way of pooling collective knowledge about creating Web pages campuswide.

"It's really a group of individuals who share a need for information about creating Web pages," Wheelock said.

More than 30 people attended the first meeting in April. At the second meeting, the OU Athletic Web team spoke on incorporating graphics in Web pages.

"So much of what makes the Web attractive is the graphic appearance and interactive elements," Wheelock said.

The group has no budget, Wheelock said.

As a result, it is limited in the speakers it can get, so it looks for volunteer speakers and topics.

In the future, the group wants to offer a free half-day or full-day workshop to the public.
