What happened?
Don Alejandro de la Vega finds his love in Madrid. His father, Don Sebastian de la Vega, had built a hacienda in California. After Diego was born he and his wife return to California, Los Angeles. There, they make a lot of friends, like the Escalante family who run a taverna. A few years later, Diego's mother dies. In the series no reason is given.

In the "Legend begins" one learns about Felipe. Diego goes to Mexico to his uncle's funeral. When he is on his way to Los Angelos he finds Felipe. The young boy has lost his parents by the August Revolution. When Diego can't find his family, he decides to take the frightened boy, who can't hear or speak anymore,  with him and takes care after him. A little later he leaves California, because he wants to study in Madrid. Sir Edmund Kendall teaches him to fight with the saber and whip. Probably Diego learns a lot more.

In Madrid he gets acquainted with a girl called Sephira. He loves her and asks her to marry him. She accepts but unfortunately she leaves him broken-hearted when she doesn't show up. He doesn't know her brother is hurt and she has to take care after the revolutionist. At the same time his father has asked him to return home. So he leaves Madrid.

Meanwhile Victoria has taken over the taverna. Her brothers, Fransisco and Ramon, and her father have left the area to take revenge on her mother's death. She was killed for helping a wounded revolutionist.

Back home Diego's broken heart is immediately mended, if it hasn't during the sea voyage. His youth-friend Victoria Escalante has turned into a beautiful, lovely young lady, whom he meets in her taverna fighting an impolite solder. He stands up for her and by his action he gets aquainted with this new Alcalde Luis Ramon. His father stops him, when he wants to challenge the Alcalde.

Felipe and Diego are the only ones who know about a secret cave in the De la Vega hacienda. Felipe shows Diego the fox, which is hiding in the cave. At the same moment Diego learns that Felipe is able to hear. They keep it a secret, because Felipe is afraid of having Don Alejandro treating him differently, when he knows about his hearing. Diego has found a way to free his father and Victoria from the Alcalde's jail and to protect the people against the Alcalde. He becomes the masked man Zorro. A few days later Felipe and Diego find Toronado, who will join them.

Victoria falls in love with Zorro, not with Don Diego, though she thinks he is very handsome. Don Diego is too studious and doesn't seem to be caring about the pueblo.
As Zorro he tries to push her towards Diego, but he doesn't succeed. [Broken Mask]

After a while he gets frustrated of being Zorro, because his father calls him names many times and he can't get closer to Victoria. he even wants to give up, but Don Fernando, an angel, shows him how Los Angelos would look like if he had never been Zorro. [It's a wonderful Zorro]

In the meantime he tries to help the people by publishing a paper called the Los Angeles Guardian as the boring studious young caballero. [The Guardian]

When Victoria gets hurt, one day, he has no choice but taking her into Zorro's lair. She almost begs him to share his secret with her, but he is too afraid of the bandits having Victoria hurt. So he refuses. Instead he asks her to marry the man beneath the mask, which she accepts, of course. [An affair to remember]

Victoria can't understand Diego and a little she know of him. She always thought that Diego doesn't care for women, till she meets Sephira, whom is still in love with Don Diego. But he doesn't want her back. He admits after Sephira's departure once having loved her, but now loving another, who doesn't love him back. [Old flame]

In the "Devil' fortress" Alcalde Luis Ramon found his death at the Devil's fortress, where he tried to steal the land deed of the De la Vega's. So new Alcalde is apointed by the king, but this man never comes in Los Angelos. [New Broom] Ignatio De Soto, an old study mate of Diego's, arrives in the pueblo. He isn't less evil than Luis Ramon, because he is obsessed by Zorro as well. He just wants to get back to Madrid as a hero. Like Ramon he treats sergeant Jaime Mendoza like a fool. The friendly sergeant has to make a choice between good and evil many times, again. By the insults, Mendoza isn't able to do a smart thing. This man has great respect for Don Diego and is very fond of Victoria's cooking. Don Diego uses this fondness to get more information about the Alcalde's plans.

[The arrival, Death and taxes, Conumdrum, The Discovery]
No one could think of a worse enemy, but Gilberto Risendo shows the pueblo that it could be worse. This man is Don Diego's twin brother nobody ever knew. The midwife was an evil woman, who wanted to be rich and was eager to devaste the De la Vega family. She took away the eldest son of Don Alejandro and Doņa Elena Felicidad [The unhappy medium]. The emissary came to Los Angelos to claim his property. He never thought having to deal with the bandit called Zorro, but soon he finds out who the real man behind the mask is. When he fights Don Diego, he reveals family secret. Before he is able to kill Diego and his father, De Soto had shot him.
After this tragedy Diego tells his father and Victoria he will adopt Felipe, at first he wanted to tell them the truth. The series end with the scene Don Alejandro asking Diego what Gilberto was trying to say, when he got shot: .....
