AHL Modification |
Follow the steps below to eliminate your Automatic Headlamp System |
WARNING! |
If you have problems following directions or do not feel comfortable working with common household tools, then by all means do not attempt these mods. Be sure to read and understand each step before attempting them. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to drop me an email. Ask before you screw something up! |
1. For this mod you will need a resistor and a screwdriver. It is better to have screwdriver bit in your ratchet due to the tight clearance between the speaker grille and the windshield. A small, stubby screwdriver will also work great. |
Here we go! |
2. Here is the resistor. |
3. Take the ends of the resistor and bend them. You should have a 'U' shape when you are done. It doesn't have do be perfect. Function over form! |
4. Here is a picture of the passenger side speaker grille. It is held on by two screws. The sensor is also in the grille. |
5. Remove the 2 screws. Be warned, the screws are long as they hold the speaker in place as well as the grille. |
6. Push down on the back of the grille. This will tilt the grille and allow you to pull it out straight out towards you. Pull the grille out, DO NOT pull up on the grille. You will damage the tabs that hold the grille in place. |
7. The sensor is attached to the bottom of the speaker grille. |
9. Looking at the end of the wire harness, take note of the 2 female connectors. Insert each end of the resistor into each of the connectors. |
10. This is how the resistor should look in the wire harness. |
The End |
8. Using a screwdriver, lift the tab to free the sensor from the wire harness. |
11. You will not be plugging the wire harness back into the sensor once you have the resistor in there, so ziptie it out of the way. |
12. Now, replace the speaker grille on the dashboard, replace the screws and you are done. Piece of cake. Also, if you ever plan on replacing the stock speakers for some better units, now is a great time to swap them out. Kill two birds with one stone. |
The Ohm rating of the resistor you will need will vary by the year of your truck. Look for your model year in the list below: |
Year |
Ohm Rating |
1998 - 1999 |
2000 - 2001 |
2.2k Ohm |
1.2k - 2.2k Ohm |
The resistors are available at Radio Shack. A pack of 5 cost about $0.75 |

If you own a 1998 + S-Series 4X4 (GMC or Chevy) please be sure to note the different rated resistor that is required for the modification. The resistors are different than the 2wd models! |
98+ ZR2 Owners!!! |
2 Wheel Drive |
ZR2 |
Late 99s & 2000 - 2001 |
680 Ohm |
1998 Model year 2wd trucks can use a variety of resistors ranging from 1.2k to 2.2k Ohm. Start with the lowest rating and work your way up until you find one that works for your paticular truck. |
