I had always heard that fish heads were wont to be roly-poly, but this is clearly not the case; this Janus number is more likely to flop and stare pathetically. I visited the little grocer's in a nearby neighborhood again, and was rewarded with some great Inedible Stuff from the Sea shots. I bought some grilled eel that was ridiculously cheap and made myself an eel-and-rice feast, with some kim chee on the side; in fact, except for the bread and mustard that accompanied it, it was a thoroughly Japanese meal. Yes, I know kim chee is Korean, but the Japanese love it and they hate Koreans, so it doesn't do to mention it too loudly.
Actually, I realized that I have yet to see any racism here more serious than the constant stares and pointing that greet any Western foreigner. But I digress.
Yesterday I didn't post because I had been shanghaied by some friends and forced to partake in a slumber party, replete with make-overs, delightfully scandalous revelations and panty-clad pillow fights. Yes, really. Well, really nothing except the sleep-over. Anyway, it was Manae's birthday today, so to celebrate Owen and I went over to Manae's and spent the evening with her and the friend from last week, and ended up staying the night, although her friend left. The whole thing was a little strange, but it was really fun and not uncomfortable at all, so I guess it doesn't matter. That was also the first time I've been woken up in the morning by someone speaking Japanese, which is a rather interesting experience.
This Japanese class I have on Wednesdays is so frustrating. There are two parts to the class: today, in the first part I learned the word for "genetic recombination" and discussed GMO. In the second part, I drew pictures for a storyboard of a kid's story that I'm presenting in two weeks. One of these things is not like the other, and if you guessed "pony," I'm afraid you just weren't paying attention.
Since getting here I have spent most of my time glutting myself on mandarin oranges. Since I've just been getting them canned, I'm sure that I could find them cheaper in the States, but for some reason because I'm in Japan I feel like I have license to waste money on delicious, canned Asian fruit. Today at the grocer's I bought enough fresh mandarin oranges to kill a yak, nay, even unto a herd of yaks moving at high speeds while wearing body armor and helmets.
I also bought so much garlic that vampires in South Dakota are going to need gas masks. I got all that for $1.50, whereas getting just four bulbs at the same place would have cost $1. I am a shopping goddess.
