Dress up

By Sarah

AJ went into the bathroom and opened up the cabinet where his mother kept her make-up.  He searched through it carefully.  A little while later his mother came in looking for him.

"Oh my God AJ what are you doing," she said, smothering up a laugh.

He looked at his mother her best pink lipstick smeared across his lips and a little on his chin. "Nothin', " he replied. "Don't I look pretty Mommy?"

"Oh, AJ.  Of course, but I don't want you playing with my make-up any more okay?"

"Yes, Mommy," he said looking a bit crestfallen.

"Let me clean you up baby," she said grabbing his chin and wiping it with a wet cloth.

When his mom wasn't looking he pocketed the lipstick for later.

The next day when Cecilia was cleaning the kitchen and Rick was playing with his friends down the street, AJ decided to look through his mom's things again.  He climbed up the stairs and crept slowly into his mother's room.  He opened the closet and rummaged through it.

Rick walked up the stairs towards his room.  On his way he heard some noise coming from his mom's room.  At first he thought nothing of it and just kept walking but then curiosity took him over.  He opened the door to her room only to find his brother AJ spraying perfume on.  AJ was wearing their mom's blue and white dress, blue high heels, make-up, and a pearl necklace.

"AJ!" he said, laughing harder than he had in a while. "What are you doing?"

"I'm trying to look pretty," he said. "Just like Mommy!"

"Guys don't dress up like that!"

"Why not?"

"Cause we just don't."

"I don't believe you," he said. "I can do it if I wanna!"

"It's true," Rick said looking at his brother in the oversized dress. "I don't think Mom will appreciate you wrinkling her dress though."

They both laughed.

"Okay Rick, I won't wear Mommy's make-up or clothes anymore," he promised.

"Good.  Now why don't we get some cookies, Mom just finished making some.  I can smell 'em from up here.  But first we need to clean you up," he said, taking off the dress AJ was wearing.  Luckily he still had on his clothes from earlier in the day.

They scrubbed the make-up off and took off the jewelry.  While Rick's back was turned AJ took the pearl necklace and put it in his pocket.

"Mmm. These are good Mom," AJ said while chewing on a chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven.

"They sure are Mom," Rick said after finishing all his cookies.

"Thank you, boys. AJ honey, don't talk with you mouth full."

"Yes ma'am," AJ replied after swallowing what he had left of his 4th cookie.

Rick slyly took his brother's last cookie, and quickly ate it.

"Hey! Where'd my other cookie go?" AJ asked noticing that it was gone.

"I dunno," replied his brother and he shrugged, crumbs of the cookie still on his lips and cheeks.
