The unwanted gift It sat there, alone, unwanted, ignored. No one noticed when it slunk away into the shadows. Hidden from mind long before it was hidden from sight. No one cared when it faded from sight and mind, Only one other knew of its presence, so why should they have? But it was rejected, not forgotten nor misplaced. It was given, handed back, but never returned. A gift of this kind cannot simply be returned, refunded or replaced. In the giving was love and hope, On the return was pain but hope remained, For the opportunity to be given again was there. Confusion reigned, for the gift, at last it seemed, was accepted. But it wasn’t, it was only toyed with and ungiven once more. Ungiven’s not a word in the English dictionary, But to use the word ‘returned’ would not be right, To return is to give back; this gift was thrown. |
