the second biggest city
the second biggest city in lithuania with the population of 415,700 and the area of 156 sq. km. it was founded in the 12th century and owes its existence to its favourable geographic position. kaunas is situated in the centre of lithuania, at the confluence of the two biggest rivers the nemunas and the neris, 100 km from the capital vilnius and 250 km from the port city klaipeda. for twenty years kaunas was a provisional capital of lithuania.
the architectural ensemble of the monastery of pazaislis is situated on picturesque woodland near kaunas, on the river nemunas.  a sea - the sea of kaunas - has come into being, and it surrounds the majestic ensemble of pazaislis from three sides. the architectural ensemble of the monastery of pazaislis of the order of the camaldulians built in the second half of the 17th century belongs to the most remarkable and interesting monuments of architecture and art of the baroque style not only in the baltic states but in the whole of north europe.
