spice. n. One or other of various strongly flavored or aromatic substances of vegetable origin, obtained from tropical plants, commonly used as condiments. (The Oxford English Dictionary)

The word "spice" derives from the Latin word species, meaning specific kind, and later, goods or merchandise.

Exotic and aromatic spices give us pleasure in our enjoyment of food, they are unvaluable in folk medecines and modern medications.
