Downsized? Laid off? Age Discrimination?

You've been screwed by your long-term employer

Downsized (polite term?) or Canned. What does it feel like to be dumped after 25 years on the job? Lousy, but it happens constantly now, especially if you are over 50. There is no corporate paternalism any more, and long-term employees are a saleable asset to the stockholders -- i.e., each hundred or so you can get rid of (with their 5-week vacations, pension plans, benefits, insurance, etc.) means a point or two on the investors' portfolios. It becomes even easier for companies these days in the current environment -- takeovers, mergers, streamlining.

What Are You Going to Do?

      • Kill yourself
      • Rob a bank
      • Live on the streets
      • Write web pages

      Get Another Job

Right! It's bad for lower-level, non-union, semi-management types with no golden parachutes or anything more than a severance payment that will only last a few months. Unemployment benefits also stop after six months, because the Dept. of Labor claims that unemployment is at its lowest level in years: "Plenty of jobs out there."

Yeah, to work in fast food joints, or to start low as a recent college grad who will no doubt move on in a couple of years to another job, so no long-time commitment (drain) on the hiring company.

Why is it so hard to find the job you are best qualified for -- for example, someone having spent 25 years in the data processing field, with a good reputation, widely experienced in all its aspects, from programming to trail design, maintenance, documentation, and constant troubleshooting? Well, the Headhunters claim someone like this is a Mainframe Dinosaur, no longer state-of-the-art or high-tech (in spite of knowing a lot about the Web by learning PC/Windows/Internet stuff on one's own). Nothing available right now -- maybe an interview next month, but there will be 250 applicants for that position. After all, companies dumped thousands of programmers after the Y2K thing went bust.

      So Now What?

Admit it: the real problem is very simple. AGE DISCRIMINATION. It's illegal, but so is cheating on your income tax.
