Grobius's Other Web HostsJanuary 2002: The old free web-hosting sites, with their banner ads, are for the most part now defunct, like the World Trade Center -- just in the last year. Pity. A few have survived under the aegis of the Trellis umbrella, where to get rid of a zillion pop-up-and-under ads you have to pay them about $10 a month per site. Here is what's left of the Grobius Shortling Freeservices Network (GSFN)
Under the Aegis of various FreeHomePages |
Most of the file managers and templates on these servers are slow and tricky (or just stupid), and the inserted banner ads, pop-ups and other things very irritating. Many have really ugly home pages and interfaces that are hard to navigate. What do you expect for free? Old-timers like Tripod/Angelfire and Yahoo/Geocities now have the best file managers for maintaining your site (at least, I think so, because I'm used to them). If all else fails, you can use AOL's FTP to upload files to other sites -- if you have AOL -- but their program is really clunky. |
