Early History: Russia and the Baltics
Historical Novels and Fantasies
Lou Goble: The Kalevide; the national epic of Estonia. Supposedly similar to the Kalevala (Finland's epic). Very odd mores that I didn't find sympathetic at all. Didn't like this much. The hero is left
stuck for all eternity guarding the nation with his legs cut off, sitting on a horse in a cave, and his arm permanently jammed into a crevice in the wall -- ugh. The Esths are one of those lost tribe sorts of people who still speak a pre-Indo-European language and have a mind-set that is slightly skewed to what we
think of as 'European'. They are sort of like an American Indian tribe to the Russians, like the Chechnyans,
and have suffered for it. (So why is this on the web page? Don't ask!)
