Letitia B. Broughton


Letitia B. Broughton, was born August 5, 1839, in Georgia. Her parents were Edward Broughton (III) and Epsie (Epsey/Essey) Elliot Broughton. She married James L. Richardson on October 7, 1858 in Walton County, Georgia. James was the son of James and Mary Elizabeth Clark Richardson. He birth was November 27, 1836 in Good Hope, Walton County, Georgia.

Together, Letitia and James would raise a large family, despite the tragic loss of three of their 10 children - two as infants and one as a toddler.

Children:

  • James Edward (Eddie) Richardson, born August 3, 1859. He died February 19, 1880 in Camden, Quachita County, Arkansas.
  • Willie Richardson, born January 20, 1861 in Arkansas. He died six months later on June 8th.
  • Mary Epsie Richardson, born April 20, 1862. She married John Y. Murry on Movember 24, 1887.
  • Margarett (Maggie) Richardson, born February 5, 1864 in Arkansas. She married Charles A Barker on February 17, 1881.
  • Lou Ella Richardson, born June 23, 1866 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas (or GA). She married James Burchanan Black, Sr. on October 18, 1883 in Camden, Arkansas. She died February 25, 1939 in Racetrack, Delta Co, Texas and is buried at Ben Franklin Cemetery.
  • John Harlow Francis Richardson, born December 5, 1868. He died at the age of two on August 8, 1870.
  • Emory Laton Richardson, born July 22, 1871 in Arkansas. He married Mary (Nettie) Brooks on December 15, 1896.
  • Twin daughters: Martha (Mattie) Billups Richardson and Sarah Clarke (Sally) Richardson, born August 12, 1874 in Arkansas. Martha married Durwood B. Martin on December 20, 1893. Sarah died on August 27th in 1951.
  • Susan Jessie Richardson, born October 6, 1879. She died less than a month later on October 27, 1879.

Tragically, just days after the death of their youngest child, Susan, Letitia would lose her life. She died November 5, 1879 in Camden, Quachita County, Arkansas and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. James would continue to raise his remaining children for another 10 years. He passed away September 17, 1889 and is also bured in Geenwood Cemetery.
