Samuel Broughton's Descendants

Samuel Broughton was born in Jefferson County, New York on August 4, 1819 to Amos Broughton (III) and his wife Nancy Timmerman. Samuel would not remain in New York however, but instead moved west with his family. He followed his father and mother into Ohio and then following his father's death, led his mother and family into Indiana where they eventually settled in Swan Township.

Before moving to Indiana however, Samuel married Almira Cummings on November 7, 1839 in Marion County, Ohio. She was from Ohio, having been born in Logan County on February 29, 1820. In an interesting twist, Samuel's father-in-law, Joseph Cummings, would also become his step-father after Joseph married Samuel's mother, Nancy in 1864.

Samuel and Almira had seven children.

When the Civil War split the nation, Samuel Broughton joined his brother-in-law, Luman Baker, and enlisted in the 5th Indiana Battery in 1861. Unlike his brother-in-law, Samuel would survive the war to return to his family.

The village was Swan was platted in 1870 (78 lots) by Samuel, his brother Orville Broughton and Franklin Kilkert. The Broughton brothers burned brick at Swan and helped build the Lima Plank Road; the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad through western Ohio; and the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad through Noble County, Indiana.

Samuel became a widower when his wife Almira died December 7, 1899. He would follow her a short time later when he died on September 1, 1901. Burial was at Swan Cemetery, Indiana.

Delmar Broughton

Delmar Broughton was the eldest child of Samuel Broughton and his wife Almira. He was born around 1841. Delmar married Margaret Cool on October 3, 1860 and fathered three children:

• Sadella Broughton - b.ca.1866
• Minna Broughton - b.ca.1868

Bela Broughton

Bela Broughton was born to Samuel and Almira Broughton on November 24, 1843. He married Emily Preston born the daughter of Anson and Electa (Holcomb) Preston in 1844. Like his father, Bela fought for the union in the Civil War. He served two years in Company F, 13th Indiana volunteers.

Bela and Emily had four children and many grandchildren:

Lamont Broughton	born in 1864, he married Dora Jackson on June 1, 1884. Dora was 2-years his junior.
Elton Broughton	born circa 1868, he married Nora Kniss, the daughter of Harvey and Sophia Kniss, on October 2, 1887. They lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan which is where Nora was killed in an auto accident on January 26, 1927.
Fredonia Broughton	born May 28, 1874, she married Herbert Martin who was born just a few days before her on May 17, 1874 to Samuel and Caroline Martin. Fredonia gave birth to one son, Paul H., in 1899. Herbert died in 1957. Fredonia died in July 1960. Burial was at Swan Cemetery.
Walter B. Broughton	born May 7, 1876, he married Nettie Whonsetler on March 30, 1898. She was a few month older than Walter, having been born October 31, 1875. The couple had two kids: Dean - b.1899 and Ruth - b.1901. Nettie died in 1960. Walter died in December 1966. Burial at Swan Cemetery, Indiana.

Both Bela and Emily would live well into the 20th century. Bela's wife, Emily died on November 21, 1935. Bela followed on June 12, 1937 and was buried at Swan Cemetery, Indiana.

Lucy A. Broughton

Lucy A. Broughton was born August 18, 1847 in Swan Township, Indiana. She married James P. Bolton on New Year's Day in 1868. He was born in Canada in 1844 to George and Jane Bolton of Newcastle, England. James served as a Union soldier in the Civil War in Company A of the 21st Wisconsin Infantry. Following the war, Lucy and James had and raised their six children: Evalyn, Ellis, Amy, J. Carl, John and Walter. James died in November 1922. Lucy passed away in 1929 and was buried at Swan Cemetery, Noble County, Indiana.

Lois Broughton

Lois Broughton was born to Samuel and Almira Broughton on September 8, 1849. She married Christopher C. Simon on May 15, 1866.

Christopher was a Civil War veteran, having served in Company K, 44th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After the war, Christopher worked with his father-in-law in the lumber, brick and tile business before becoming sheriff of Noble County from 1894 to 1898. He also raised Percheron horses. Lois had eight children: Clara L.,Harry O., Clarence C., Curtis C., Florence O., Maude A., Pearl M. and Jennie.

Christopher died April 14, 1916. Lois died in 1934. They are buried at Woodland Cemetery in Lagrange County.

William Broughton

William Broughton was born April 24, 1853 to Samuel and Almira Broughton. The infant would live less than a month, dying May 13, 1853. He's buried at Swan Cemetery in Swan Township, Noble County, Indiana.

Samuel Broughton Jr.

Samuel Broughton Jr. was born circa 1858 to Samuel and Almira Broughton. He married Ida L. Zahnter on February 18, 1880.

Oliver Morton Broughton

Oliver Morton Broughton was born in 1865 to Samuel and Almira Broughton. He married a woman named Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). The couple had three children:

• Walter M. Broughton - born in 1886, married Hazel (Barrow) Brown. They had two children: Dorothy Broughton on Aug. 13, 1914 and George E. Broughton on Nov. 19, 1920. Walter died in 1941 and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Garrett.
• Anna R. Broughton - born in 1887, married a man whose last name was Toole. She died in 1977 andis buried at Calvary Cemetery in Garrett.
• Fred H. Broughton - born in 1888, died at age 6 months and 24 days. He's buried at Calvary Cemetery in Garrett.

Elizabeth died at age 56 on July 22, 1916. Oliver passed away on December 7, 1937 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Garrett.
