John Broughton's Descendants

John Broughton was born in England around the year 1615. He would grow up in the United Kingdom, but at the age of 20 he would depart for the New World which would later become the United States. As a passenger aboard the "Thomas", John Broughton embarked at Gravesend, England in August 1635. This was two years after the first Dutch settlement was established in Hartford, Connecticut.

According to some research, John appears to have been a planter in Windsor, Connecticutt. Records show a John Broughton married on November 15, 1650 to Hannah Bascom, the daughter of Thomas Bascom of Windsor. John eventually moved his family to Northhampton, Massachusetts where he raised his children:

John Broughton's death was recorded in official records in Northhampton, Massachusetts on March 16, 1662.

John Broughton II

John and Hannah's son, John Broughton II (We've labeled him the second to distinguish him from his father.) was born in 1654 in Northampton, Massachusetts where he grew up. In February 1676, John II was in Captain William Turner's Company. Two years later, on October 29, 1678, he married the daughter of Matthew Woodruff, Elizabeth Woodruff.

To this union were born nine children: John Broughton (III), Samuel Broughton, Mary Broughton, Ebenezer Broughton, Hannah Broughton, Esther Broughton, Mehitable Broughton, Abigail Broughton, and Thomas Broughton.

John II and Elizabeth raised their family in Windham, Connecticut. It is in Windham where John II passed away on January 5, 1731.

Thomas Broughton

Thomas Broughton was born to John Broughton and Hannah Bascom in Massachusetts sometime during the mid-1600's. Thomas grew up in colonial America and eventually settle in Deerfield Massachusetts with his wife and family. Tragically it is in Deerfield where in June 1693 where Thomas, his wife and three children were killed by Indians.

John Broughton III

John Broughton III (We only use the third to distinguish him from his father and grandfather.) was born to John Broughton II and Elizabeth Woodruff on January 7, 1680 in Northampton, Massachusetts. His birth came one year prior to the colonization of Pennsylvania by William Penn. At the age of 29, John III married Tabitha Kingsley whose family/ancestors had come to the American colonies on the Mayflower. The wedding ceremony took place in Windham, Connecticut on May 10, 1709. To them was born a son whom they called Amos Broughton.

Side Note: Although the Broughtons were not affected by it, an epedemic of yellow fever swept through the American colonies killing many settlers in 1709. It was particularly harsh in Delaware.

Amos Broughton

Amos Broughton was born to John Broughton III and his wife Tabitha on May 23, 1718 in Windham, Connecticut. In a wedding ceremony performed by Justice of the Peace Lycester Grosvener, Amos Broughton wed Mary Coates on August 30, 1742. The couple would have six children: John, Amos (Jr), Mary Ann, Abijah, William, and Nathan.
