Wynton Marsalis:
AT THE OCTOROON BALLS
A FIDDLER'S TALE (Suite)

Composed in 1995 as consequence of a comission for the Lincoln Center of New York (for which he collaborates since 1987), At the Octoroon Balls is presented as a peculiar string quartet in seven movements of very different entity, on which the references with jazz and blue are not only unmistakable but stylistically necessary. With it Marsalis is revealed as a composer far from the supposed limitations that his activities as trumpet performer could suppose, what is corroborated with the suite from the stupendous A Fiddler's Tale (1998), whose complete version with narration can be enjoyed in another disk also published by Sony, and that places the North American composer at a frankly attractive level.
