VARESE SARABANDE FILM CLASSICS
John Barry:
OUT OF AFRICA

Time goes by inexorably, and for many of us it seems that it was yesterday when we listen for the first time this superb John Barry score... but there have been more than ten years, and that which in its moment was awarded with the Academy Award to Best Original Score has been converted into a true classic. And as such it is treated by Varése Sarabande when it is re-recorded with an excellent symphonic force under the baton of a good composer transformed, to the ocasion, in a good orchestral conductor. This type of re-recordings serve, in addition to approach certain fans sector that could be a little much misled on the existence and quality of this music (even that this could seem incredible), to demonstrate something that we are commenting quite often: the good music improves when is listened in different interpretations, each one of those which can provide something new. In reference to the original record, which under the baton of the own composer was edited by MCA in 1985, we have gained a big quantity of Barry's original music (as Karen Builds a School or Harvest), a complete version of Mozart's Clarinete Concerto Adagio, and a serene and resigned tone very attractive in its performance, as well we have lost the ethnic and incidental cues originally included (of very limited interest), and certain passional air that the own Barry granted to his music. Classicism and sobriety, elegance and beauty; just only one of the best works of the eighties.
