Jerry Goldsmith:
PATTON
TORA! TORA! TORA!

In spite of the lenght and the importance of the film, Patton (1970) did not need of a great quantity of music to be able to develop the complex and ambiguous figure of the famous American general. As good commented by the own Goldsmith in the libretto that accompanies this new recording, there are three basic elements over which is built the score: what is archaic, what is soldier and what is religious, and the three find a perfect rendition throughout the fourteen cues included, creating a fascinating musical and human woven. Very different are the five cues of the other war film included, the also famous Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) never before available on record. Here it outweighs the action over the human portrait, and from the splendid Main Title with its logical eastern influences present in the practical totality of the work, going through the tension of On the Way, Goldsmith's superb music makes us to wish a greater incorporation of the same. The new versions are stupendous, with a magnificent sound, and it does not result difficult to prove the absolute necesity of its enjoyment. Finally, outline that with respect to Patton's original issue edited in its moment by 20th Century Records, it have been included two unpublished cues (The Cemetery and An Eloquent Man), as well as it have been renowned other two (Winter March is here German March, and Patton March is the Entr'acte). Of course there is not Patton's initial speech, but for that is Franklin J. Schaffner's superb movie.
