The Kentucky Land Grants, p. (1 Volume in 2 Parts) Part 1

The documentary land records of Kentucky fall necessarily into several groups. The earliest of these are known as the Virginia Grants. They were issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia based upon warrants given in some cases as consideration for military service in the French and Indian war, and later in the Revolution. They are dated from 1782 to 1792 and are recorded in sixteen books containing 8,909 pages. The Virginia Grants total 9,564, and are given in Chapter II. The surveys upon which these grants were issued are recorded in eleven books. The original papers are in file boxes labeled and indexed. Some of the most notable men in early Virginia and Kentucky history were interested in these old Virginia Grants. Among them are to be found Patrick Henry at that time Governor of Virginia, John Craig, Daniel Boone, John, William and Leo May, Thomas and Humphrey Marshall, President James Monroe, Governor Isaac Shelby, and others. Included within this group are three tracts granted to President George Washington, all located, however, in Ohio. Considerable boundaries were set aside for Levi Hollinsworth of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and John Cockey Owings of Baltimore, Maryland. With the establishment of statehood in Kentucky in 1792, all Virginia Grants relating to lands west of the Big Sandy River were transferred to this Commonwealth and placed in the custody of the Register of the Land Office in the Kentucky State Capitol.
