Eritrea to embark on new military adventure in May 1999. Eritrea has committed troops to a joint operation with Libya in the Congo. According to the Congolese foreign minister, the Eritrean and Libyan troops are supposed to "progressively push, in an orderly manner, the invaders to the border,'' (Reuters, Apr 27). However, the "invaders" (the Congo rebels and Rwanda) have refused to sign the Libyan agreement.

The UNHCR has listed Eritrea as a top five refugee country of origin. Meanwhile, Ethiopia was listed as one of the top refugee hosting countries. Eritrea's ranking is due to its refusal to expedite the return of its over 300,000 refugees from the Sudan. The refugees are said to be "eager" to return home and the UNHCR stated it is waiting for the go-ahead from the Eritrean government in order to repatriate the refugees. (Xinhua April 27). Anadarko Petroluem Company states it may pull out of Eritrea (April 30) The CEO of Anadarko expressed disappointment at its third unsuccessful well, and stated that the company "may be through in Eritrea." However, he indicated that Anadarko wanted to re-evaluate the seismic data and may want to "study and look in one more area." Anadarko took a charge of 20 million dollars for operations associated with the dry hole in Eritrea.
