"How Wars Start" - Today's Quote explains how Eritrea got into the current mess:
"Armed forces are almost always raised for defense. But once you have all this armed strength, there is the temptation to use it. A large dollop of military force encourages nations to be more aggressive in their dealings with others. Military and diplomatic adventures become more common. This causes some wars to start by accident, the result of playing with fire. At other times, the situation becomes quite depraved with nations doing the 'grab what we can and sue for peace drill."
Eritrea's grabbing of Badime, Zalanbessa and Alitiena, using its oversized army, fits the "depraved" model described above.

May 18 - Ethiopian Troops Capture Barentu:
Barentu has fallen less than six days after the Mereb offensive began. Apparently, Eritrea has been forced to abandon the entire Gash-Setit region stretching all the way to the Sudanese border.

Alex Last quoted Eritrean sources as saying fighting was continuing south of Barentu. If true, this would mean that some Eritrean forces are virtually trapped and may have to escape to Sudan.

At least a third of Eritrea's tank forces were deployed in the Gash-Setit region. Most of these tanks will have been either destroyed or abandoned. The Eritreans may have been able to withdraw some tanks along the flat, paved road to Akurdat - 60 kilometers away. But these tanks, and any other vehicles on the move on the flat plain, will now be highly vulnerable to the Ethiopian airforce.
