While in the coma he had gone from being a
child to being a young adult and had grown a beard
where smooth skin had been before the accident.
He spent 2 ½ months in the pediatrics ward and
managed to become the kidder of the wards,
racing around on the beds used to take people to
surgery and having wheelchair races with other kids.
Gangrene set in and he underwent removable of this dead skin and tissue. Skin graphs were made using the skin from his upper legs. In order to survive the severe pain he was given massive doses of morphine and became almost addicted to it.
He went to Physical Therapy to learn how to
walk again sans the right leg.Yhis was a very painful time for him indeed.
But he was determined and pushed himself to the maximum.
Finally he was allowed to go home, on crutches,
to try and resume a "normal" life.
This was not to be for a while. When he went to
get his "new leg" he endured the hours of fittings
and then the pain of the straps and belts to hold
it on.
He decided to did not like these and reentered
the hospital to have an additional 3 inches removed
from the stump which would allow him to wear a
"total suction" leg. (prothesisis).
In addition to these adjustments he was told
that he would have to continue to walk the mile to
school ( now on crutches) because the buses were
for kids living two miles or more from the school.
In those days there were no "home tutors"
provided through the school system and his mom
could not afford a private one.J was forced
to drop out of school when the sidewalks became too
icy to get around on and he became self schooled through high school.
Later in life he went on to earn a degree with high honors.
As he grew into a young adult he began working
in a number of jobs, from factory work to making
pizza’s and later to managing a major paint store
and finally to making trident submarines for tor
the US Navy at General Dynamics in Connecticut.
J has somehow managed to NOT be "handicapped"
in his life. Yes, he is an amputee but he is
indeed also HANDICAPABLE.
He used to scuba dive , bowl, and even tried
ice skating a few years ago when we had a major
ice storm.
He can repain almost anything from an electrical
short to an automobile.
He still plays golf, dances when he can,
climbs onto the roof (this is not suggested) when
he has to and totally rebuilt our sons trailer
over a two year period.
Yes, I am proud of everything he has done and
continues to do. He has been on disability for
18 years and cannot work, not because of his leg
but because of his back, neck and shoulder injuries.
He is in pain and does not take medication unless
he has to, he has to work slowly and stop
frequently and often overdoes it, creating
severe pain to himself.
This page is dedicated to him and to every single handicapable person out there, and to those of you that have thought of giving up because something has happened to make a major change in your life such as this.
