The following poem was sent to me ny a woman that was hit head on by a young man that had been drinking at a party. I am adding her letter and her poem here for everyone to read. It carries a meassage to all of us. Thank you Terri.A POEM
While out of state attending a Homecoming game for the University my nephew attends and plays football for I was hit almost head on by a young man who had been drinking. This young man came to see me in the hospital before I was released and broke down telling me how sorry it was that it happened.... I believed him and I forgave him... His actions showed me he was telling the truth. He admitted himself into treatment, thus ending this year at the university. He also lost his Athletic Scholarship due to the DWI he received. He told me nothing mattered more to him then for me to recover...which I will. The second group of visitors before I was discharge from the hospital was a group of this young mans friends. I'm finding it a little harder to forgive them and to help myself do that I wrote this poem on the way back to Minnesota.
They All Knew He stumbled out of the house To much to drink "No way" he'd say "I just stepped wrong" He fumbled with the keys way to long "Not enough light" he'd say "I can't see" He drove over the curb as he pulled away and they all knew and let him go He missed the corner and went up in a yard "To many cars from the party" he said "I couldn't get around" They all watched as he blew through the stop sign no one even tried to stop him but they all knew and a few minutes later when they all heard the sirens they all knew "There goes his license" they all said he'll lose it now But as time when on and the sirens multiplied nobody knew nobody knew that he hurt someone bad nobody knew he hurt somebody's mother somebody's sister somebody's friend somebody's lover and as they moved down the street to see what had happened they saw her they saw the blood they saw the mangled car and they saw him sitting in the squad car uninjured not even realizing what had just happened some cried.... some shook their heads.... others just walked away.... knowing they knew and did nothing about it © Theresa Hill All rights Reserved
MOM

I went to a party mom, I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, mom, so I drank soda instead.
I felt really proud inside, mom, the way you said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, mom, even though the others said I should.
I know I did the right thing, mom, I know you're always right.
Now the party's finally ending, mom, and everyone drives out of sight
As I got into my car, mom, I knew I'd get home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me, mom, so responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, mom, but as I pulled onto the road,
The other car didn't see me, mom, and it hit me like a load.
As I lay here on the pavement, mom, I hear the policeman say,
The other guy is drunk, mom, and now I'm the one who will pay.
I'm lying here dying, mom, I wish you'd get here soon.
How come this happened to me, mom, my life burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, mom, most of it is mine.
I hear the paramedic say, I'll be dead in a short time.
I just wanted to tell you, mom, I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, mom, the others didn't think.
He didn't know where he was going, mom,
He was probably at the same party as I
The only difference is, mom, He drank and I will die.
Why do people drink, mom? It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now, mom, pains just like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, mom, I don't think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying, mom, when all they can do is stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, mom, tell daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, write 'DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL' on my grave.
Someone should have told him, mom, not to drink and drive.
If only they had taken the time, mom, I would still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, mom, I'm becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, mom, because when I needed you, you were always there.
I have one last question, mom, before I say good-bye.
I didn't ever drink, mom, so why am I to die?
This is the end, mom, I wish I could look you in the eye.
To say these final words, mom, I LOVE YOU AND GOOD-BYE.
