I Am Mama

By Dorothy Etelamaki

I remember when you were just a baby.
You were so cuddly and small.
You smelled of roses and lilacs,
powder and all.
You were so soft and warm
as I held you in my arms.
Your small hand would reach out
and grasp my finger and thumb.
You would look up at me and give
the biggest little grin,
all wet and dribbly with drool.
I would smile and whisper in your ear,
"You are my precious little son,
and I am mama!"

I remember when you were a young boy,
playing ball in the park.
Running through the sprinkler
on a warm summer day.
Hiding your young face behind a book,
pretending not to see me,
When you knew you had done a wrong.
But I always knew my son,
Because I am mama!

You grew up all too soon,
and went on your way,
You joined the service and left mama behind,
To make a new life for yourself.
Mama stayed at home
and for your protection always prayed.
Even though you are now a grown man,
I am stll mama!

Soon you had a wife and children of your own.
A wonderful career and home.
I am a grandma now.
But to you my son I am still mama!

For My Son Mark.
