The Toggery Five

The Toggery Five, from Manchester, achieved a minor degree of fame by finishing runners-up in a beat group competition held by the popular television programme "Ready, Steady, Go!". (The competition was won by The Bo Street Runners).

They won a deal with Parlophone, and for their second single were given "I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys", a song written by Andrew Oldham and Keith Richards, but considered too "poppy" for the Stones. Despite several high-profile television appearances promoting the record, they failed to make the charts.

The group remained active until 1966. By that time, both Mick Abrahams and Clive Bunker had passed through their ranks. Both subsequently became founder members of Jethro Tull. Guitarist Renshaw later accompanied Wayne Fontana before joining a later line-up of Herman's Hermits.
