This outstanding show had the same set list as San Fran plus
"Stratford-On-Guy". I was blown away by this show! Highlight for band and
crowd was definitely "Divorce Song".
Talk to you later, Michael

Subject: thoughts on Seattle show
Date: 29 Sep 1998 08:48:23 GMT
Well, tonight I saw Liz in Seattle at the King Cat Theater. Sat in
the fifth row, which was just fine.
Some thoughts on the show...
It really didn't live up to what I thought it was going to be. I think
the main reason is that I thought her band kind of sucked. There really
wasn't anything interesting about any of the musicianship. In my opinion,
the backing band just kind of plodded along. Not much energy from them.
And, Liz seemed pretty awkward onstage, at least for the first part of the
set...
Then, when she seemed to really be hitting her stride -- it was over.
Just barely over an hour. I saw Ray Charles a couple years back play a
longer show than that, and he's pushing 70. Sure, she's only got three
albums out, but there's no reason why the show couldn't have had at least
another half hour. Dispense with the slide show at the beginning, I'd
rather have more music.
Don't get me wrong. As much as I left dissapointed, I still enjoyed
the show very much. Highlights for me were Divorce Song, Mesmerizing,
Support System, 6'1", and especially Perfect World (my fave song off the
new album... she messed up her timing a bit early in the song, but
recovered pretty easily). But, some songs lacked punch, particularly
Supernova -- which I blame on the band. There were just so many songs I
was hoping to hear. I was really surprised at the sparse selection from
whitechocolate... I don't understand why she wouldn't want to
showcase such a great album. Instead the concentration was on
Exile, which seemed to please the crowd (they responded really well
to the show closer, Fuck and Run) but i really would've liked to hear a
good deal more of the new stuff. And Whipsmart seemed almost
ignored.
Regardless of the too-short running time, I just think the backing band
needs plenty of work to do the material justice.

Right behind you in 7th. What a great venue. Do you know how many
people it seats? 700?

Man, I absolutely loved the show. And I'll have to disagree about the
band. Two examples: Did you notice the drumming in "Johnny Feelgood"?
It was so funky. And, as you mention, "Divorce Song" was amazing, and it
was totally due to the band. I agree at times they weren't all that
amazing, but they certainly were some of the time.

Yeah, what was the deal with the slide show? The only thing it seemed
to do was piss off the crowd, which I guess she must have been trying to
do. It made it a little better that I was expecting it. But I thought
the show went long enough. Longer would be better, but I was happy. At
least we got an encore.

Yeah, Supernova wasn't all that great. All the songs you mentioned were
great, but I thought "Uncle Alvarez" and "What Makes You Happy" were the
highights. Unbelievable.
