Panning For The Gold
A Little History
Take a Look at this one
Hey Dusty and I just realized
that you may not know much about the History of the discovery of gold in
alaska. So we have decided to give you a breif history of gold being found
in Alaska. Most people know about the famous 1897 Gold Rush in the Alaska
- Yukon Territory, But the first Alaska Gold was actually discovered in
48 years earlier on the Kenai Peninsula. There was a pre-Rush find in 1896,
which lured as many as 3,000 prospectors to the Cook Inlet area, which
planted the beginning of present-day Girdwood and Anchorage areas. In the
early 1900s, the Gold Fields in the Mat-Su and Knik areas both which are
near the head of the Cook Inlet and the foot of the Iditarod Trail. Which
became a transportation hub for the Gold fields of the areas. Many of the
boom towns have become ghost twons now.
But most of the miners in
their rush to move on left behind plenty of evidence of their travels and
travails. Most of which are on display in area museums. Things like abandoned
equipment, diaries and photos.
Other treasures can be found
at the end of long dirt roads, or by the sides of local hiking trails.
Treasures like heavey wood sluice boxes to complete mining camps are the
items that can be found.
2 1/2 hours by road south
of Anchorage is the Hope Sunrise area, which is the starting point for
the local Gold Rush history. Site of both the first monumental Gold discovery
by Russian engineer Peter Doroshin in 1849 and the monumental rediscovery
of gold by miner Al King on the Kenai Peninsula, which touched off the
Cook Inlet stampede.
