The Danes I Have Loved

"Mr Moose"

I am here to tell you I absolutely, positively LOVE Great Danes!

I don't remember when my passion for Great Danes began, but I guess it would have started with " Mr. Moose"

"Moose" came into my life about 25 years ago when I lived in Catskill N.Y. where I was raising my five children with the help of my first husband. We resided in a four story, seven bedroom, victorian house.

That house never seemed too big except when I had to clean it!  There were a dozen of kids in and out, up and down and all around that maze. Cousins, neighbors, friends, and many various and sundry cats. Wendy, our old dog, and Mr Moose would leap and bound from one end to the other!!

Mr.Moose was not great in the looks department, you see, but we know now, after having purebreds, that he was a good deal Dane. Moose was huge! He loved like a dane, played like a dane, and protected proudly, me and mine.

I used to take him with me at night on my walk to the Crisis Intervention Center, where I helped man the suicide crisis hot line. I would walk, proudly with this gentle giant at my side, through the darkest streets, calm in my faith in him . I could feel his strength and awareness beside me, and his love.

At home, he became the clown and even allowed my son, Jim to take him, to a summer program pet show. He was kissed and petted by numerous sticky, sweaty kids. But the two of them survived the rabbits, and gerbils and the cats in bonnets, and brought home the blue ribbon!

I wish I could tell you Mr Mooses' story has a happy ending, but I cannot. For you see, he had a few bad habits.

He pulled the front porch off a few times when he was tied there. Moose absolutely abhored the mailman. The poor man eventually refused to deliver our mail ,which broke some kind of law, because our mail could not be delivered.

Mooses' final blow came, when he got the idea to snack on all the old victorian baseboards in the backhall. My now ex-husband, gave me an ultimatum! It was either Moose or him!

I made a wrong choice, because, I found Moose a new home and eventually lost the husband anyway, LOL.

I saw a refrigerator magnet the other day that says, "Husband and dog missing......Reward for the dog!" Hmmmmmmm.

The point is, I will never forget Moose. The loving and caring for him, caused me to want more danes in my life and so it was to be.

I LOVE DANES and have owned five more. Follow Mooses' tracks to the next pages, and meet the gang that followed him, into my heart.
