This was My lifes work as far as Nursing is concerned. I was founder
and owner Tender Loving Care.
We cared for twenty two medically
fragile infants and children in our home over a two and one half
year period. I say we, because my son Mark, Jim and Paul plus my
husband Allen ,were trained to be care givers also. It was a family
labor of love.
I established a certificate of need with the State of Hawaii for a
20 bed long term care facility for infants and children in a
home environment.
A grant was written for funding and submitted to the 1989 legislature.
This action brought the project to the attention of the State of
California. I traveled there to meet with neonatalogists who were
trying to open the same type of facility and who had not been able
to get past the red tape. This group became pledged for three
quarter of a million dollars to open TLC if we could get the medicare/medicaid funding.
They would then use this pilot for California.
The monies were earmarked for purchase and setup of an existing SNF, which would be
transformed into a home environment while still providing skilled nursing support and
auxiliary personal. The upper part of the facility would be for mothers on drugs to
bond with there babies while going through rehab in a inpatient setting
In the meantime our family cared for these babies and children in our 4 bedroom home.
We did Heart/apnea monitors, resuscitation.oxygen therapy, Tracs, N.G. Tubes,Gastrostomy tubes,
wound care, and auctioning.
I also hired and trained a C.N.A who became a good friend and the adoptive Mother to
one of the babies. This feed me up to handle the promotion, legal matters, permits, state
regulations and licensing.
