At an age when most television dramas are either past their prime or dead and buried, Law & Order continues to rewrite the television rule book. In its eighth season on the air, the series is as creatively and commercially successful as ever, and the show captured the 1997 Emmy Award as Outstanding Drama Series (after five previous nominations).
Filmed entirely on location in New York City, the series is often inspired by cases taken from today’s latest headlines. But the legal, ethical and personal stories presented are always original and unique to the show.

The series’ deceptively simple format -- half the show follows Jerry Orbach (Detective Lennie Briscoe), Benjamin Bratt (Detective Rey Curtis), S. Epatha Merkerson (Lt. Anita Van Buren), unraveling clues; the other half shows prosecutors, led by Sam Waterston (ADA Jack McCoy), Angie Harmon (ADA Abbie Carmichael), and Steven Hill (District Attorney Adam Schiff) waging war in the courtroom -- has remained essentially unchanged since its debut in 1990. All of the main characters with the exception of Steven Hill have changed several times, yet the series remains as innovative as ever, exploring complex issues and evoking powerful performances from both the regular cast and weekly guest stars. It also evokes a viewership that’s both loyal and upscale: the series overindexes in key adult 18-49 categories.
Law & Order heads into its ninth season as fresh as ever, invigorated by its ratings strength, Emmy and Writers Guild awards, and cast changes set for fall. It is in the rare position to be both the longest-running drama on network television, and among the very best.
"In the Criminal Justice System the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important groups. The police who investigate crime and the District Attorneys who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories." ".wav" format
