This situation comedy debuted on ABC on Thursday, September 24, 1970. After the first half-season it was moved to a Friday night time slot, where it became part of a successful block of hip comedies aimed at young viewers. The show never made the top 25 rated programs during its five years on ABC, yet it has acquired an immense cult status in syndication.

Based on the successful Neil Simon 1965 Broadway play starring Walter Matthau and Art Carney (later transformed into a 1968 movie with Matthau and Jack Lemmon), this series posed the famous question: Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?

Considering that these men were polar opposites in matters of taste and behavior, it is possible that their mutual need to drive each other crazy is the very bond that cements their friendship and makes it possible for these well-to-do heterosexuals to coexist as roommates.

Tony Randall co-stars as Felix Unger, a professional studio photographer (portraits a specialty) and mildly neurotic neat-freak who is so compulsively tidy that he has driven his wife nuts and made her feel inferior in such specialties as cleaning and cooking. After she kicks him out of the house, he shows up at the apartment of his longtime friend, sportswriter Oscar Madison (Jack Klugman). Several years earlier, according to the narrated introduction which appeared in seasons two through four, Madison's wife had thrown him out for being an incurable slob.
