MRS. J. S. SINGLETON DIED XMAS DAY

Mrs. Sarah Josephine Singleton, wife of J. S. ( Uncle Dock) Singleton died at their home in the Humphrey Addition, Wednesday morning, December 25, Christmas Day.  Her death was immediately traceable to an injury received on Sunday morning three days prior, when she fell at her home and broke her hip.  However, she had been ill for two or three years, and in her fraility, was unable to withstand the intense suffering caused by her injury.

Sarah Josephine Simmons was born in La Fayette County, Miss., on October 16, 1853 being therefore seventy-six years, two months and nine days of age at her death.  She was married to J. S. Singleton on December 23, 1875, making their married life a span of fifty-four years and two days.

This good family moved to Texas, to Fannin County in 1894, thence back to Mississippi for a year, and in 1896 they came to De Leon where they have made their home since.

To this union were born eight children, one dying in infancy and one son, Melvin, preceding her to the better world by a little more than five years, dying in 1924, at the age of 39.  Three sons and three daughters survive:  Frank Singleton, Wellman, Tex.; Oscar Singleton, Lamesa and Thomas Singleton, De Leon; Mrs. Ladelle Humphrey, De Leon; Mrs. Elvie Fields, Paducah and Mrs. Alice Warren, Stamford, all being present at the funeral.  One brother and one sister survive; the sister Mrs. Millie Florence, Rule, Texas being present at the funeral.  The brother, Lee Simmons of Oxford, Miss. could not be present because of his advanced age.  There are 33 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren left to mourn the loss of a loving grandmother.

Mrs. Singleton was converted and joined the Baptist Church when she was sixteen years of age and led a devoted Christian life, always finding joy and comfort in serving her Master and her life blessed many.  To know her was to love her, and this gentle disposition enabled her to count her friends by scores and hundreds.  These attested to their love when they came to follow her bier to its last resting place in the De Leon Cemetery where Revs. W. L. Skaggs and J. M. Strickland spoke comforting words to the bereaved ones Thursday afternoon.
