Fiddle Man
words & music: Dennis Kamakahi,

translation: Dennis Kamakahi

Hele mâua i ke ala kua `ehu la
We travel on the long, winding road

Mai Kohala a Kukuihaele la,
From Kohala to Kukuihaele

`Imi mâua i ke kâne
We search for the man

Noho ana i ka mâlie.
Who lives in the calm of the land.

HUI:
Chorus:

Kaulana `oe e Kanaka Waiolina
Famous are you o Fiddle Man

Mahalo mâkou i kou aloha
Admired for your love

No Waipi`o i ka noe
For Waipi`o in the mist

No Sam Li`a, he inoa.
For Sam Li`a, a dedication.

Niu kou mau mele no ka po`e Hawai`i
Many are the songs for Hawai`i's people

Me ka hui Waianuhea a`o Hi`ilawe la
With your band Waianuhea of Hi`ilawe

Mele ana no ka lani nui,
Singing for the great chief

`O Kalaniana`ole
Prince Jonah Kûhiô Kalaniana`ole.

HUI

Ha`ina `ia mai ana ka puana,
Thus my story is told

No ka hui Waianuhea a`o Hi`ilawe la,
Of the Waianuhea band of Hi`ilawe

Ha`aheo a`o Waipi`o
Pride of Waipi`o

Ka nohona a`o Liloa.
The residence of the high chief Liloa.

HUI

From the CD liner notes:
"
Mana`o: This song was written to honor the most prolific living Hawaiian poet, composer and fiddle player. Sam Li`a Kalainaina, Jr. He was the songwriter of Waipi`o Valley on the Big Island and was a legend in his own time. He wrote many songs; his most famous was Heha Waipi`o. He lived to the age of 96. His knowledge of old Hawai`i, as well as his music, will be forever treasured. To his memory, I dedicate this song." ~ Dennis Kamakahi
