The youngest Norwegian wartime volunteer to enter the Waffen-SS. He joined the Freiwilligen Legion "Norwegen" at Fallingbostel, Germany in July 1941 at the age of fourteen years old and seven months! He then trained and served in the 14. Panzer-Jäger-Kompanie of the Legion. Before the end of the war, Blegen became a highly decorated officer in SS-Panzer-Grenadier Regiment 23 "Norge" of the 11. SS-Freiwilligen Panzer-Grenadier Division "Nordland".
Postwar:
In 1965, Per Blegen emigrated to the United States, becoming a U.S. citizen in the early 1970's. He died in Norway of a massive heart attack while having dinner with a childhood friend (he had suffered from heart disease since his late-forties and had undergone two heart surgeries). According to correspondence from his daughter, Per Blegen's funeral "was held on a cold, crisp Norwegian morning... and the chapel was completely filled with relatives and friends, including many of my father's wartime friends. Due to my father's youth when he entered the war, these men were much older and many of them have since passed away. My father was cremated, and his ashes are buried in the US."
