To the Confederate heroes, both living and dead, and especially to those whose names are identified with Spartanburg County, nearly or quite all whose names are herein recorded, who for four years performed gallant and noble service in the armies of the Confederacy, whose marches and battles, wounds and suffering, willing sacrifice, patient endurance and steadfast devotion to principle has never been surpassed throughout the civilized world, this volume is consecrated to their lasting honor and memory by THE AUTHOR

The first chapters cover a general history of the county----emigration, division of the original Cherokee Indian Territory, court proceedings, growth of industry, progress of education, progress of religion, progress of temperance, political events, and the progress of manufacturing.

Next come the family chapters: Featured Families (there is an index that lists most of the names, but you still have to search the text for some references) Anderson (from PA), Archer (VA and NC), Barry (Buck’s County, PA), Ballenger (VA), Blake (VA), Bomar (VA), Bowden (VA), Cannon (VA), Cannon (VA), Caldwell (N. The final chapters are in list format covering State Senators and Representatives 1786-1900, Voting Precinct Managers, Justices of the Peace, and the first census. The last chapter lists names of soldiers from Spartanburg County who were enlisted in the Confederate States including those enlisted in the South Carolina State Militia, State Reserves and Cadet Corps during the years 1861-1865.

CHAPTER 21: Descendents of William Foster and Thomas James. This is William (Major Billie) Foster who married Mary Ann Jones James (widow of Thomas James who was killed in the Revolutionary War in 1779).
