A Love that Can Never Be

By: Tina Tan JuAn Er

Cool, cool water
flows in shimmering bands around me.
For a moment in time,
I'm a mermaid in a desolate sea.

I'm going no where. Watching you in the dark of night
I'm from no where. As you look sadly out to sea.
I exist. I've been here a thousand nights.
I'm here. But it's a love that can never be.

When the curious wind sweeps over you,
I would pretend that it is me finding out every inch of your being.
The envious rain would dampen your statuesque face.
It's me sending you imaginary kisses that can not be seen.

Sometimes I sneak into your dreams
When Venus kisses the moon.
You must have seen my face sometime.
I kissed your lips maroon.

I'm going no where. Watching you in the dark of night
I'm from no where. As you look sadly out to sea.
I guard over you. I'll be here a thousand years.
I'm here. But it's a love that can never be.
