Class Routine |
Each session begins with half an hour of outside
play for those children who want it. The child is always free to choose
and outside time is allowed for later in the session as well. Children
then move inside and are helped to choose an activity for themselves. This
may be work in the Practical Life or Sensorial area, art or reading and
maths work depending on the level of development and the interest of the
child at the time. Staff work to assist children to find a sense of balance
for themselves in their daily activities. |
Given that repetition is in the nature of 3-6
year olds children will often become “obsessed” with a particular activity.
It is sometimes difficult for adults to comprehend the reasons why as children
repeat an activity over and over again until they are satisfied that they
have mastered it. Montessori
made special note of the importance of this in her lengthy observations
of children. Given the space to work through their interest children will
usually be able to balance their work when it is viewed over a period of
time rather than in the course of one week. |
When children feel like a snack they help themselves.
Children have the option to make toast for themselves, or to spread crackers.
A variety of spreads is available and there is always water to drink. Daily
snacks form part of the practical life area. Every day two children are
able to make scones which are baked for the group to share. As the children
grow, their scone making becomes quite expert as our staff of tasters will
testify. |
Group music and movement is offered later in the
session followed by shared fruit time seated at the tables. The children
are then gathered together for a story which helps to give a sense of closure
to the session. |
