Montessori education is not about “hothousing” children and the Children’s
House does not focus merely on academic work. While language, reading,
maths and science work is offered to children who are ready to begin it,
the aim of staff is to provide a peaceful, gentle and calm space for children
to develop their own interests at their own pace. Materials stimulate the
natural curiosity of the child. Practical life exercises provide enormous
satisfaction to young children as any parent of a “helpful” 2 or 3 year
old will agree! Cultural and physical activities are offered in the form
of music and drama, art, outside play and gardening. Spiritual life is
not forgotten and is considered an important aspect of a child’s development.
The Children’s House does not advocate a particular religion, but in consultation
with parents/whanau will seek to meet Maria Montessori’s challenge: “It
is not enough to ensure for the child food, clothing and shelter, on the
satisfaction of his more spiritual needs the progress of humanity depends
- the creation indeed of a stronger and better humanity.” (To Educate the
Human Potential, 1948, p. 120) |
