Supreme Court of the United States

Henry Billings Brown

Henry Billings Brown was born 3 Mar 1836 in South Lee, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, a son of Billings Brown and Mary Tyler; he was a grandson of Elias Brown Sr. and Sabra Billings. He studied law and was admitted to the bar. He served as a Circuit Judge in 1868. He was appointed Judge of the United States Court of the Eastern District of Michigan and served 1875-1890.

Henry was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1890. He served until 1906. Henry died at Bronxville, a suburb of New York City, 4 Sep 1913. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit, Mi.

United States Courts

Addison Brown Sr. was born 21 Feb 1830 in West Newbury, Ma. He was appointed a Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in 1881 and served until 1901. He died in 1913.

He married Helen Carpenter Gaskin in 1893 and they had three sons and a daughter.

State Supreme Court

Calvin L. Brown of Morris, Minnesota was elected as a Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1899.

C. Stuart Brown was born 30 Jun 1918 in Freedom, Wyoming. He became an attorney and later a District Judge from 1965-1981. He was elected as a Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court and served 1981-1988. He died at Cheyenne, Wy. 12 Dec 1997 and was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, Wy.

J. Hay Brown of Lancaster, Pa. studied law and became an attorney. He was a delegate to the Republican Party National Convention in 1880. He was named Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and served 1915-1921.

Joel Bascom Brown was born 18 May 1872 in Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama. He studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was a delegate from Alabama to the Democratic Party National Convention in 1908. He was elected as Judge of the Alabama Court of Appeals and served 1915-1919. He was elected as an Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and served 1919-1921 and again from 1927.
