BARBARA SANDERS
ca 1945 MS.

BARBARA SANDERS - born Jan, Feb or Mar, 1945; lived in Mississippi. I've been searching for you all my life. Before I even knew about you, there was a void in my heart and it has been always searching. This Valentine's Day I would like to wish you love, joy and happiness. Know that I am doing good. I walked at 9 months, spoke earlier than the norm, and sang "Silent Night" at church after turning 1 in September. God blessed me with so many talents. I participated in ballet, tap, jazz, point, gymnastics, cheerleading, basketball, track, and softball. (I started dance at 2....because in my words "I need a talent in order to become Miss America.) I pestered mom about this until she found someone that would take a child as young as I was. My first dance recital that same year, I led the other girls in my class onto stage and have enjoyed being in the "lime light" ever since. As you can see, I have a genuine interest in the arts. However, in the classroom I was the teacher's favorite because I was so very quiet. Never wanted any attention drawn to me. In school that is. I also had just as strong an interest in animals. I've had dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, cows, horses, rabbits and my mom says that it was so interesting to watch how they interacted with me. I look like you. (Your grandchildren do too.) I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that your gift of a family that could provide for me is truly appreciated. I believe I've grown up to be a person you would be proud of. Most important.....I love you for your courage. Know that you continue to remain in my heart and that I do hope that someday we will meet. Your daughter,

EUGENIO SAUNDERS TROPMAN
Jamaica to Cuba

I am ROGELIO SAUNDERS, a Cuban writer and my family name is the same as yours. For a long time I have been looking for the origin of this name and recently (last summer) I knew that it is a Scottish family name (as someone told me, who lives in Argentina in the countryside, where there is an important Scottish settlement). This family name comes from my grandfather, who was a son of a Jamaican. I have never known if he was a son of a Jamaican who emigrated to Cuba (to the east part of the island) or if he himself was born in Cuba from an exiled family. But anyhow: I have always wanted to know the history of this part of the family, particularly concerning my grandfather: EUGENIO SAUNDERS TROPMAN. (I don't know if his original name was Eugenio or Eugene and I don't know either if this --Tropman-- is the right spelling of his last name). The only info I have is: a man called Eugenio (or Eugene) Saunders Tropman, who was born near the end of the 1800's, most probably in Jamaica. Maybe someone can throw a drop of light on this issue. I will be very grateful for any help. [EDITOR's NOTE: it is very common in Latin countries to use a combination of both the father's name and the mother's maiden name as a "last" name for a child. My college roommate's (from Cuba) "last" name was "Gonzalez-Posada Martin-Hidalgo" -- which was a combination of his father's double name and his mother's double name]
