Descendants of Francis Sinnett

Generation One

1. Francis1 Sinnett may be the same who was christened on 27 Jul 1801 at Saint Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada.1 He married Hannah (--?--) say 1825.2 He died on 5 Sep 1879 at Millville, York, New Brunswick, at age 78. He was buried after 5 Sep 1879 at Millville, York, New Brunswick.

He was also known as Francis Sinnott. As of 27 Jun 1801, he if he was the one born in Quebec on this date, he was also known as Francois Senet. As of 5 Sep 1879, he was also known as Francis Zenette.3

Because all census records indicate that this family was of French origin, native to Canada or New Brunswick, and their name is often spelt with a beginning , I checked Quebec and located a family called SENET. I have not proof to date, however, that Francis Sinnett/Zenette of New Brunswick came from that family.

Children of Francis1 Sinnett and Hannah (--?--) or another previous wife, were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Elizabeth2 Sinnett (Francis1) was born between 1825 and 1826 in New Brunswick, Canada.5 She married John G L Ogden on 17 Nov 1850 at Petersville, Queens, New Brunswick, Canada.6

Children of Elizabeth2 Sinnett and John G L Ogden were as follows:

3. Letitia2 Sinnett (Francis1) was born circa 1827 at New Brunswick. She married Thomas Liston circa 1844 in New Brunswick. She married Simpson James Murphy on 13 Mar 1856 at St. John (Portland), St. John, New Brunswick; Married by Rev. Wm. Smithson.12

On 13 Mar 1856, she was living in Portland, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada; Portland resources prior to 1871 are few and far between. Geographically the area belonged to James Simonds and at the time of the arrival of the Loyalists extended from Portland Point near the falls eastwardly to the marshes near Red Head. All that was left for distribution to the loyalists was a rocky peninsular region called initially Parr town and Carleton on the west side of the harbour. By the 1850's the principal settlement was at Indiantown, otherwise called the Town of Portland, extending westwardly to the Falls and bounded Northerly by the Kennebecasis and St. John Rivers. The area initially was a place to trade goods with the Indians. Later it was a landing place for boats bringing passengers and supplies down river. As the lumber industry grew, it became the site of many sawmills and large residential areas developed to accommodate the workers. The first surviving partial census is 1871. The bits and scraps we have prior to that date include: (1) Residents of Portland (1814) - 'Generations'v. 31, p. 28; (2) Residents of Indiantown (a comparison of 1863 tax lists with 1865 City Directory) - 'Generations'v. 31, p. 17; (3) Cholera Deaths 1854 (gives street addresses) - City Municipal Records.13

I did not find any reference to either Thomas Liston or Letitia Liston in any records available.

Children of Letitia2 Sinnett and Thomas Liston were as follows:

4. Michael2 Sinnett (Francis1) was born between 1832 and 1833 at New Brunswick, Canada.15 He married Jane (--?--) say 1863.16 He died in 1924.17

He was buried on 29 Jun 1931 at Millville, York, New Brunswick, Canada.

James Liston may have been related to John Kenny Liston's mother, Elena Daley, in some way.23 John Kenny (spelling may vary) was adopted between 1870 and 1880 at St. John, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada; James Liston of Millville, NB had no children, went to St. John, and got a boy (John Kinney) who took the name Liston and married Lilla (Winricker) Smith and had ten children. EJC(1991)

Mr. James Liston did not formally adopt John Kenny as a boy, but having no children of his own--at the time, he asked John to go by the name of Liston when he got married so that his family name might be carried on--which he did--so now there are many Listons scattered around as they did raise a big family.

John Kenny Liston passed away in 1969 and he would never talk much about his childhood, so little is known of his adoptive father through him. OL(1993/4/15)

John Kinney Liston was the brother of Rose Kinney, who married Thomas W. Sinnett of Clarendon Parish, Charlotte County, NB. They had another brother William Kenny, who was living in Augusta, Maine when Rose Kinney Sinnett died. Thomas W. Sinnett was the nephew of Letitia Sinnett Liston, James Liston's mother, and James's first cousin.24,25
