Featured Artist: Jeanne Tubman
You’ve been hearing a lot about Jeanne Tubman lately, and that’s because she’s one busy lady. When the long-time owner of the Pinnacle Paint Shop decided to concentrate solely on her art a couple of years ago, it led to a flood of work, followed by a shower of honors and more work. She took the “Best Oil Painting” Award at the Algoma Fall Festival of the Arts in October of 2004, the Third Place ribbon and $250 cash award in the Oil Painting division of the “Our Town” exhibit in Birmingham in October of 2005 and the “Best of Show” at the Pavilion Art Show in Cheboygan last July. She painted a 100 foot square mural in the River of History Museum for the Chippewa Historical Society last winter and spring and is painting another now. Both are under an MCACA grant obtained by the Chippewa County Historical Society.
Jeanne has signed a contract with Wells Chapin of Avery Color Studios, who will produce 5000 each of her lighthouse paintings on NOAA charts of the lighthouses of Lake Superior and of the Straits of Mackinac. (The catalog with the poster in it will be out this month. The retail price for the poster is $13.95. Order from Avery Color Studios at 1-800-722-9925). She has been asked to produce the cover art for two books by mystery writer Dennis White of Manitoulin Island. She is presently working on the fourth of seven paintings which were commissioned this fall. She also teaches oil painting classes for both children and adults at the Personal Touch. (Call them at 632-7435 for more information on class schedules.)
Jeanne is a native of Sault Ste. Marie. She studied at Lake Superior State University and the Sault College in Sault, Ontario; with nationally acclaimed tole painter Priscilla Hauser at the Binney and Smith Company and with Robert Ralph Carmichael of Echo Bay. She is a regular at the Sault Summer Arts Festival and has appeared in prestigious festivals and shows all over Michigan. Her work may be found at Alberta House, at the Personal Touch, at By the Bay Nautical Art Galleries in Harbor Springs and Traverse City, at the Great Lakes Gallery, Webers Floral and Gifts, the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers gift shop in Mackinaw City and the Detour Lighthouse Preservation Society on Drummond Island. She is a member of the Sault Area Arts Council Board and of the Le Sault Artists Guild.
She still takes the time to help out in Alberta House and you can see her demonstrating oil painting on Wednesday, February 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. Check out her website at jeannetubman.com
