The class packet includes the following: Once the Needs Assessment is returned we will know if you need any further instruction on how to set up your particular computer for a temporary (free) connection to the UACN-ACAD1 server. If you already have Internet/WWW access you can go directly to the classroom online without waiting for further instruction. The class packet is available in two ways:

  2. In printed form. This can be requested from the Distance Education Department. Call Sue Barlow (see about) or stop by the DE office, upstairs at the UAS-S campus.

SOFTWARE

On-Campus
If you plan to complete this course in the UAS Sitka Campus Computer Lab, the software you will use is the Email and WWW browser of your choice. We currently offer Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. We will ask that you register for a permanent email address with the free WWW Mail company of your choice. How to do so is located in the Email Preferences document.

Off-Campus/Distance Students
If you plan to complete this course from your home or office and you need to set up your computer to access the UACN-ACAD1 server, we will attempt to help you. However, you may use any ISP (Internet Service Provider) that you wish. Any telecommunications software for IBM-Compatible or Macintosh computers will be fine. Any email and WWW browser is fine. We will ask that you register for a permanent email address with the free WWW Mail company of your choice. How to do so is located in the Email Preferences document.

COMPUTERS

On-Campus
If you plan to complete this course in the UAS Sitka Campus computer Lab, you will use the hardware provided in the lab. The computer lab has a direct connection to the University of Alaska computer Network (UACN). The computer lab has both IBM-compatible and Macintosh computers available for student use.

Off-Campus/Distance Students
If you plan to complete this course from your home or office, you will need to have access to a PC, a modem, and a telephone line and an ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as PTI, Worldcom, or the Universities ACAD1 server.

This instructor will not be able to provide extensive assistance in setting up computers, modems and software due to the many different systems and variables involved. Students should refer to their instruction manuals or their computer dealer.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The Internet Concepts and Applications course introduces the student to services provided by their Internet Service Provider connection.

The student will gain an understanding of their place on the Internet, good computer health and safety, and terminology.

The student will be able to use and change the mail preferences of their chosen email program, explore communication expressions, and use PABs, file attachments, and safe and spamless emailing.

Students will access links to guides on the use of their chosen World Wide Web Browser and gain Critical Assessment skills to be used in brief topical research in Universities, Libraries and Alaskan Cites, with the majority of work relying on Power Cerfing and researching subjects by keywords, topics or meta search engines,Telnet and Gophers, and People Searching.

The student will explore File Transfer Protocols and Downloads, the ways to receive and install programs, software, games, or files.

The student will use and explain the different Communication programs available, such as Discussion Groups and Chat Rooms, and critically assess a wide variety of programs including Usenet Newsgroups, Listservs, IRC, Web Chat groups and Downloadable Multimedia Communication programs such as ICQ or PowWow.

The student will gain the skills needed to responsibly, safely and ethically use the Internet. Issues on copyrights, citing, security and ethics will be explored with a final short paper completing the course.

FORMAT

The Online Internet course is composed of short narratives, resource guides, texts and guides, and hands-on assignments. Each assignment will require a message to be sent to the instructor via electronic mail or a post to a specific newsgroup or chat room.

GRADING

This course is Pass/Fail. Students need to successfully complete all of the exercises to pass the course. If a student doesn't successfully complete an exercise, they will be notified by e-mail and requested to resubmit it. There will be no written tests.
