People Search
Choose one of the following people search engines. Look for yourself, a friend or family member, anyone you wish. Tell me which search you used and whether you were successful.
Telnet
Once you log on to your local network, telnet lets you log in remotely to other networks on the Internet. If you do not have a logon PID on the remote computer, you can often gain access by logging on as "anonymous." Briefly explore Telnet/Hytelnet and attempt to connect to a remote computer. Tell the instructor where you attempted to connect and what you learned.
Gopher Holes
Gopher is a play on words. It was invented in 1991 at the University of Minnesota, home of the Golden Gophers. It's function on the Internet is to help you "go fer" things. You navigate through a hierarchy of menus to locate and download texts, pictures, audio clips, and videos. It is a protocol for organizing information hierarchically on the Internet. In just the last few short years Gopher has been eclipsed by the more popular World Wide Web. Briefly explore Gopherspace. Tell the instructor what you did, where you went and what you learned.
If you have your own computer: and find a program you would like to download, do so. Tell the instructor what you downloaded and how the installation went. Do you like the program or not? If you are not using your own computer: explore the links. Tell the instructor what you found of interest.
FTP
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is the standard method for transferring files over the Internet from one computer to another. If you do not have a logon on the remote computer, you can often gain access by logging on as "anonymous."
