Internet Concepts and Applications

Welcome

Welcome to the UAS-Sitka CIOS 145 Internet Concepts and Applications Course!

Your classroom, assignments, facilitator (guide/instructor), communication information, schedule, class chat room, mail guides and webguides are all located on the internet! The Virtual Classroom is accessable through any World Wide Web Browser connected to the Internet.

The UAS-Sitka CIOS 145 Internet Concepts and Applications Course Menu is located at the following World Wide Web address (technically called the URL, which stands for Uniform Resource Locator):
http://www.shuilongs.com/cios/cios145menu.html.
This virtual classroom was created by The Facilitator and is dedicated to understanding cyberspace, using email, finding resources using the World Wide Web, accessing and using one or more of the Communication programs available, using critical assessment skills, and becoming aware of Security, Copyrights, Citing and Ethics on the Internet.

To get to your classroom you must be able to access the World Wide Web from any computer connected to the Internet. Your local UAS computer lab, your local library, your personal computer, your school or office computer, any option will do. If you do not have access to a computer with an Internet Service Provider and you choose to use your personal/home computer to access the ACAD1 server, you will need to set up your personal computer before beginning the class. Let us know on your Needs Assessment Form (that you should have received upon registration if a local student, or in the packet if a distance student) that you wish to do this, and what type of computer you have. We will send you the appropriate materials on setting up and using the Kerberos and ACAD1 system.

To send and receive assignments you must have an email address. We recommend that you set up a permanent web address. Many free sites are available for you to do this with. A few would be: As a student of the University of Alaska Southeast - Sitka (UAS-S) you are automatically given a PID (Personal IDentifier or Username) and free access to the Universities Internet connection - the ACAD1 T1 server if you need it and if you have your own computer set up to access the ACAD1 server. Again, as it is a temporary address and only accessable from a computer set-up to access ACAD1, we strongly recommend you register for a Free Web Mail Address.

If you do not know what any of the above means, do not know how to configure your computers communication program, or do not know how to use the on campus Internet system, then this is the class for you to begin to learn. You may give me a call at my home/office phone number if you have any questions. Please call during normal business hours, 10-5 Monday through Friday if at all possible. The number is (907)747-5582.

General technical connection help questions can be answered by Susie or Rita at 747-7727. For general help for Distance Students, contact Sue or Naomi in the administration office at 747-7757.

From the Virtual Classroom if you wish to communicate with me, choose Intercommunication/Instructor Communication from the menu to learn about the automatic online email, ICQ Pager or ClassChat Room options available. Or go directly to:
