SOFTWARE

On-Campus
If you plan to complete this course in the UAS Sitka Campus Computer Lab, the software you will use is the Email, WWW browser and Web Publishing Editor of your choice. We currently offer Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer as well as Front Page 98. We will ask that you register for a permanent email address with the free WWW Mail company of your choice as you will need this for several reasons. How to do so is located in the Email Preferences document located online at: http://www.shuilongs.com/pref.html.

Off-Campus/Distance Students
You may use any ISP (Internet Service Provider) that you wish. Any telecommunications software for IBM-Compatible or Macintosh computers will be fine. Any email and WWW browser is fine. By the end of the class we will be asking that you select and setup a web editor of your choice.

COMPUTERS

On-Campus
If you plan to complete this course in the UAS Sitka Campus computer Lab, you will use the hardware provided in the lab. The computer lab has a direct connection to the University of Alaska computer Network (UACN). The computer lab has both IBM-compatible and Macintosh computers available for student use.

Off-Campus/Distance Students
If you plan to complete this course from your home or office, you will need to have access to a PC, a modem, and a telephone line and an ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as PTI, Worldcom, or the UACN.

This instructor will not be able to provide extensive assistance in setting up browsers, modems and software due to the many different systems and variables involved. However, she will give it her best attempt to if needed. Students should refer to their online Help guides/manuals or their program manuals.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The Web Publishing Concepts and Design - I course teaches the creation of web pages using good web design concepts, basic HTML language, assessing between web authoring software, creating and editing web pages, creating links between and within web pages, inserting, sizing, aligning, and linking images, the parts of an HTML document and block and character formatting.

The student will design and create a web page using a web authoring program of their choice.

The student will learn and apply web page design assessment skills.

The student will learn and apply skills to choosing and using web editor software.

The student will learn basic HTML tags, including Terms and Concepts, Document Tags, Basic Text Structures, Lists, Special Effects Tags, Anchors, and Images .

FORMAT

This Online Internet course is composed of short narratives, resource guides, texts and guides, and hands-on assignments. Each assignment will require a message to be sent to the instructor via electronic mail or a post to a specific newsgroup or chat room with the goal that the student continue to Web Publishing Part II and a final assignment of an online Web Site.

GRADING

This course is Pass/Fail. Students need to successfully complete all of the exercises to pass the course. If a student doesn't successfully complete an exercise, they will be notified by e-mail and requested to resubmit it. There will be no written tests.
