Welcome to Web Master Downloads. In this section you will learn about the many types of Web Master software programs available for download. There are only a few that are essential to every web publisher and the first part of this section deals with these "Must Haves". These you will need to download/install on your machine. If you do not have the permission to download/install programs, such as to a lab or office computer, ask your computer technician or network administrator for help. The rest of this section presents different html, audio and graphic editors, and finally explores several searchable software power sites.
If you do not know how to download and install programs onto your computer read this: Easy Download Guide
.
A Zip/Unzip Program:
Many Web Master download programs/software have been compressed and must be uncompressed to be useful. You need a special program to uncompress (unstuff or unzip). If you use a Mac, and have installed Netscape to your computer, it already includes the StuffIt Expander. On a PC, you will need to download a program that will unzip your files. The following are a few download sites.
An FTP Program:
When you are uploading files from your hard drive/disk to your Web Site folders you need software for uploading files. Many hosts provide WWW uploading services, but it is usually far faster to use an FTP client to submit files to your site. Get the free software for uploading here:
Use the FTP program to upload a web page you have created to your web host/site.
Double-click the Fetch or FTP icon. It will open a dialog box.
Type in the appropriate data (not all will be required for all programs) and click okay:
Your host should give you the following ftp information:
Profile name: something like WS_FTP32.
Host name: something like ftp.oocities.com or www.ptialaska.net.
Host type: the kind of server you will be posting to Automatic Detect or MAC Peter Server.
User ID: your login name, pid, or equivalent.
Password: your password (which you determined at some point with your ISP).
Directory path or Account if needed (usually not): where your site will be stored. Something like /cios/images/ orAthens/Georgia/1406/.
Click OK. This should bring you to the directories for both your local system and the remote host system.
Highlight the file on the local system that you wish to send.
Make sure you are in the correct folder/directory/subdirectory that you wish to send your file to.
Click the send button or the arrow --> key.
(Some programs allow you to select/drag/drop the file.)
View the uploaded file on your browser by typing in the directory location and folder name. Something like http://www.ptialaska.net/~ecpatt/testfile.html or http://www.oocities.org/Athens/Forum/1406/index.html.
Tell the instructor about your experience. Send the instructor the directory location/folder name of your first successful attempt at FTPing.
A Few Misc Downloads:
The next two programs are self explanatory in their importance once you get them.
ByteCatcher Pro: If you've ever been kicked off your ISP 1/2 way through a 2 hour download on a reaaally slow machine, then you KNOW what this download is for!
Inside Your PC : Gives you a very concise and complete report on what your computer has inside it. You need this! It answers those pesky questions that more demanding download providers will ask in order to give you the correct version for your machine. Plus it tells you all the programs currently accessable on your computer.
Assignment:

Tell the Instructor three new things you learned about your computer.
Do you think this program is necessary to Web Masters? Why or why not?
The previous class, WP I, offers a section on Web Authoring Editors which discusses the types of editors available and their pros, cons and components. The student makes an informed decision on which to download. Then, using the editor of choice, creates a "test" page.
Assignment:
If you have not used an editor to create a page, please complete the Web Authoring Editors section or, using an editor from the list below or one of your own, create a page to send to the instructor.
The second half of Web Publishing II offers a section on Multimedia programs. In that section the student will study audio editors in depth, choose and use an audio program, make and manipulate an audio file, and link to, or install it in, a web page. In the meantime, the following is a list of several audio editors. There is no assignment.
The next section of this class offers a study of graphics, including Graphics programs. In that section the student will study graphic editors in depth, choose and use a graphics program, make and manipulate an image file, and install it in a web page.
